about

Jason Lakis started the band The Red Thread in 2002, put out 3 albums on Badman Recording Co., and disbanded in the summer of 07. He had been writing for his “solo project” since around the summer of 06, and a year later he found himself with an album’s worth of songs, which is what he dubbed Mist and Mast.

He sang and played all the instruments on the debut album except for a couple keyboard and guitar part.. Wanting to play the songs properly live, he enlisted a bunch of friends from San Francisco and Oakland to fill out the live band. The band played a bunch for the next couple years, opening for like-minded artists such as Fleet Foxes, Radar Bros., Telekinesis, Oakley Hall, The Dutchess and The Duke, Perfume Genius, and many others.

The second album "Action at a Distance" was done bit differently. This time, half the album was recorded on his own, and the other half was the full live band. The sound was a slight departure from the low-fi, DIY feel of the first album. I guess you could say it was a bit more rock, and a little more polished. Over the next year his drummer moved across the country and the bass player left to spend more time with his family. What better time to start from scratch, with a new studio!

Jason spent the summer and fall of 2010 building a studio where an old garage used to be in his back yard, in Berkeley, CA. It was completed that winter, just in time for the bay area rainy season, which means a lot of time indoors…and in this case, indoors writing and recording.

This brings us to the new album. Like the first album, on "Follow a Bad Map"Jason wrote and performed everything (minus one drum track by Tim Wright and a few guitar bits by long-time member Craig Adams). The outcome is a bit more like the self-titled debut…more organic, a looser feel. He played with some experimentation in writing this time around, starting songs from drum tracks, bass lines... in a way, working backwards. It includes songs about getting lost in a canoe, heart problems, and an "FU" song dedicated to everyone who was involved in ripping off a Mist and Mast song for a Land Rover commercial.
The album was finished in the winter of 2011 and will be released in early 2012.
